Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Following the success of the Transport Act seminars sponsored by Commercial Motor earlier this year, a series of seminars on more specific aspects of goods transport operation has been arranged by this journal for November and December. Once again, the seminars are being organized and administered by Business and Industrial Training Ltd.

So that delegates may attend on separate days to hear speakers on subjects of specialist interest, or alternatively attend a whole three-day seminar to obtain guidance on fleet operation, the seminars are being arranged on three succeeding days in each centre.

For example, at the Belle Vue Hotel, Manchester 12, Fleet Maintenance will be dealt with on November 18, Transport Operating on November 19 and Freight Marketing on November 20. The programme will be repeated on November 25, 26 and 27 at the Charing Cross Hotel, London, WC2, and on December 2, 3, and 4 at the Royal Stuart Hotel, Glasgow.

The fleet maintenance seminar will deal with operators' responsibilities for vehicle maintenance (especially the effects of the Transport Act and the Road Safety Act), and the achievement of an effective maintenance system by introducing a pre-planned preventive scheme. Seminar leaders will be Mr. C. C. Toyne, assistant chief mechanical engineer, Ministry of Transport, and Mr. M. Hentall, fleet engineer, A. Packham and Co. Ltd. This course will deal in some detail with such things as vehicle prohibition procedure, the way to avoid difficulties with plating and testing, how to establish correct

maintenance periods, how to operate and document a system.

The second day, on transport operating, will be devoted to examining operators' licensing in practice, the likely application of transport managers' licensing and suggested ways of tackling the changes in drivers' hours. This will include advice on work measurement, productivity agreements and bonus schemes.

The seminar leaders will be Mr. W. Fairbairn, distribution manager, Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd, and Mr. J. P. B. Sherriff, deputy editor of Commercial Motor.

Freight marketing is the title of the third day's proceedings. This seminar will explain how to establish a costing system, how to tackle accounting and budgetary control and how to build up cost and rates structures for any type of traffic movement. Another important session will offer advice on setting up a proper freight marketing organization and how to recruit and employ transport salesmen. Seminar leaders here will be Mr. Andrew Dunn, who recently retired as administration director of Tayforth Ltd., and Mr. M. Rounding, a transport marketing specialist who is now freight sales manager, BR Merseyside division.

The fee for each day is £20, which includes lunch, coffee, tea and documentation. The fee for attending all three days at any one centre is £54. All applications and inquiries should be addressed to Business and Industrial Training Ltd, whose address appears on the accompanying application form.
