NEW POSITIONS ON THE .AUSTIN STAFF

CERTAIN staff alterations and additions have been made by the Austin Motor Co., Ltd. Mr. J. C. Haefeli has been appointed chief designer in the place of Mr. Hancock, who has resigned. lie will be responsible for the design of commercial and private chassis and all types of engine. A newcomer Mr. H. N. Charles, B.Sc., A.M.I.A.E., who becomes development engineer. He has been well known for a considerable time in connection with designing and testing work, and was previously associated with Morris Motors, Ltd., and Rotol Airscrew, Ltd.

THE POSITION OF MATES AND LOADERS

SOMEtime ago representations were made to the Ministers of Labour and War Transport with a view to reserving men employed as drivers' mates. They were, however, refused, as it was thought that older men and women could often act in this capacity, but it appears that quite a number of those who described themselves as drivers' mates could more appropriately be termed "goods loaders or porters" and would then be covered by the schedule.

The question as to whether a worker can be classified as a goods loader for purposes of reservation depends upon the work he is actually doing, and on whether he is, in fact, primarily employed as a loader. If a worker in this class also travels on the vehicle in order to load or unload, this would not necessarily take him out of the loader classification.

If any operator feels that any of his workers has been wrongly classified when registering, he should approach the appropriate local office of the Ministry of Labour and have the classification changed. _ PERSONAL PARS
