FOLLOWING PRESS criticism, not least from Commercial Motor, Mercedes-Benz is to offer a version of the Bosch Hill Hold system as an option on the Vito.
The current version of the Vito is widely accepted as being a tine product, but it's marred by a footoperated parking brake more suitable for an automatic American car than a manual van having to make frequent stops.
The inconvenience this causes is exacerbated on right-hand-drive models by the driver's need to operate clutch and parking brake simultaneously with his left foot.
The previous model was equipped with a conventional handbrake fitted specifically for the UK market, but for the current model, the engineers (or, more likely, the accountants) decided they could get away without it.
But now the Vito is to get a version of the Hill Hold technology already fitted to the Actros range.
A dashboard switch is engaged which maintains pressure in the footbrake circuit until the clutch or throttle pedal is moved an instant before moving off.
This might not be the perfect solution, but it's one that is likely to satisfy most drivers.
