Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Angry environmental representations from local residents failed to restrict the operation of TNT (UK)'s new Wigan depot before North Western Licensing Authority Martin Albu last week.

TNT can now operate 50 vehicles and 75 trailers from Hemfield Way, Ince-inMakerfield, with a condition that no authorised vehicle be left unattended on nearby Hemfield Road.

The application had upset the residents of two local houses. George Fulton, who lived in the nearby De Traffoi House, complained that he an his wife had been unable to gi in or out of their property on numerous occasions because vehicles queuing to get into tl depot and on one occasion tht queue had consisted of 18 trucks. He was also conceme about noise from forklifts, a tannoy system and the dropping of canisters on the floor.

After Fulton had admitted that the noise problem had eased in recent weeks, TNT'. Michael Cunningham said that the company had given out cc thin instructions, following the receipt of a letter of complain in August Francis Simpson, of De Tr ford Cottage, complained aboi water running on to his prope ty from a vehicle washing machine. He said that there was now considerable noise from heavy goods vehicles, though he did not blame TNT alone for that.

Cunningham said the local authority had granted TNT th right to use premises in the area for industrial purposes al the company had down-rated its trucks from 38 to 32 tonne to avoid the problem of them having to drop into a low gem and noisily strain to leave the depot. If TNT was not allowe to use the premises as an operating centre, said Cumin; ham, warehousing would still continue, and that would increase the vehicle movement: by 50%.
