Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Commercial vehicles sales are heading for another record year helped by the 15% jump in registrations last month.

According to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, CV registrations during the first 10 months of this year are running 13.7% ahead of 1987 at 303,799.

In the prestigious trucks and artics sector above 3.5 tonnes GVW Iveco Ford is still in first place with a 24.3% market share, based on 14,079 registrations this year. Next is Leyland Daf with 22.6% (13,117 trucks registered) followed by Mercedes-Benz with over 15% (8,783).

Volvo stays in fourth place with 10% (5,841) followed by Renault Truck Industries with a reduced 6.7% stake (3,923). Sandbach-based ERF continues to improve. It is now in sixth place with its 5.4% (3,177) share, having sold 1,151 more trucks during the first 10 months of 1988 compared with the same period last year.

Scania is in seventh place with 4.6% (2,697) with MANVW in eighth spot at 3.9% (2,311) and Seddon Atkinson lying ninth with an increased 3.2% stake (1,854), helped by the arrival of the new Strata range. Foden has now increased its registrations by over 120% to take a 2.1% share with 1,262 vehicles.

The total number of registrations in the sector are also up by 17.8% to 57,857.

The first official registration figures for AWD and Steyr are unlikely to appear before January 1989, although AWD reports it has sold some 600 TL trucks since it re-entered the UK civilian market in September, but this includes dealer stock.
