• This year is set to be a record twelve months for the road haulage industry and the prospects for growth are still looking good, according to the latest quarterly Road Transport Trends and Forecasts published by Commercial Motor's parent Reed Business Publishing.
Analysing the facts and fiures, the report says: DI Goods moved by road increased 7% in 1987 to surpass all previous levels. This should remain high during 1988, at around 109 billion tonnekilometres.
▪ Freight moved by road in major European countries totalled 683 billion tonne-kilometres in 1985 and the report estimates this rose to 724 billion tonne-kilometres in 1987. El New registrations for trucks have continued to boom with the first eight months of 1988 surpassing the same period in 1987 by 16%.
LI Hauliers have increased their amount of tonnekilometres moved to 77 billion in 1987 — a rise of 12% from 1986. Own-account operators on the other hand moved 3% fewer tonne-kilometres than in 1986 and their share of the market has now declined to under 30%.
The number of operators holding HGV licences has dropped according to the report. In July 1988, operators held around 67,000 licences compared to 71,000 licences two years ago. The sector of the market which most rapidly declined is the small operator with one or two trucks, where the number of licences dropped by 11%.
