• TNT has reported a 16% increase in first-quarter profits and forecasts another record performance in the year to June 1989. The Australianbased international transport group returned an operating profit of A$54.4 million (E25.6 million) for the three months to September compared with a A$16.9 million (222 million) in the same period last year. Re venues climbed nearly 15% to
a A$943 million (around £444 for contract hill
million).
Managing director Sir Peter Abeles pointed to the major contribution of the UK express delivery and newspaper distribution operations as a reason for TNT's healthy figures. He added that TNT's European overnight air express service did better than expected.
