NBC CHIEF Executive Robert Brook claimed, whilst presenting the Henry Spurrier Memorial Lecture at the Chartered Institute of Transport, that Britain's bus services have been maintained at a higher level than local authority at central Government had a right to expect.
In his lecture entitled "Pro fessionalism in Road Passenger Transport Management," Mr Brook suggested that professional busmen should be consulted on policy development in the industry and that this should not be regarded as the sole prerogative of elected representatives.
He said that it was ironic that the system of bus licensing which had done the most to assist in the retention of a comprehensive service network was being attacked as a bureaucratic mechanism to protect a nationalised industry from the expansionist pressure of competition. His view was that without road service licensing in its current form, the public transport facility in this country would be reduced.
