THE GOVERNMENT is going ahetjd with plans to reduce the amo nt of lead in petrol.
T e Transport Minister No an Fowler told MPs last wee that the current intention was to reduce the limit to 0.40 grammes per litre from January 1981.
The Government, he said, wou d consider whether any furt er action was needed whe it had received the resu ts of a review of the health effects of lead now being carried out for the Social Services Minister by a working party.
Account would also be takeii of the results of the joint studj with industry of the feasi ility and costs of possible further action to limit lead emisSions from vehicles, added Mr Fowler.
His Parliamentary Secretary, Kenneth Clarke, recalled that this report had concluded that the use of lead-free petrol in vehicles currently on the roads would in most cases create major problems of engine durability due to valve seat recession.
Assuming design of new engines for use of lead-free petrol, a slight reduction in corrosion could be expected.
