NOTHING is being considered in the Transport Department that will reduce the safety requirements imposed on vehicles, assured Kenneth Clarke, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, in the Commons last week.
Any proposals that were made would bear in mind the need to ensure that the present high standards were maintained, he added.
Mr Clarke was replying to Stanley Crowther (Labour, Rotherham) who had said that great dismay would be caused by a proposal now being considered in the Department that the routine inspection of heavy lorries and public service vehicles should be hived off to the private sector.
