Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE RETREAD Manufacturers' Association has launched a campaign to improve the industry's poor image with haulage fleet operators.

It wants to eliminate the "back-street cowboys" whose shoddy remoulds have given its members a bad name.

Brian Lawton, technical, manager of the Bandag Tyre Company, one of the leading companies in the retread field, said: "The industry has brought this image upon itself because in the past it has not done enough to get rid of these slipshod manufacturers.

"The RMA has made some progress in stamping out the problem, but there is still a long way to go. The onus is on the industry to put its house in order by improving the general quality of retreads."

Mr Lawton expects sales of retread tyres to rise dramatically in the next year ag •a result of the OPEC price rises. In an effort to improve standards, many manufacturers are introducing precured retread tyres using a cold-adhesion process.
