MORE than 1,300 Scottish drivers have threatened to strike if the Road Haulage Association Scottish area does not improve its five per cent pay offer — despite the offer of a lump sum payment to bring the agreement date into line with the rest of the Britain's drivers.
The men are based in the Fife and Clackmannan areas and the strike would take place from December 1 if the offer is not improved.
Results of a ballot of the 5,000 drivers in Scotland is expected to show a complete rejection of the offer — the men are asking for between 20 and 30 per cent pay increases.
The result of the Scottish negotiations is expected to set the pace for the rest of the country and this is the reason behind the lump sum payment offered by the hauliers.
They are worried about the continual reference to Scottish rates when other areas come to negotiate.
A spokesman for the Scot-, tish Road Haulage Association told CM that the report of the strike threat was, as yet unconfirmed and he refused to comment on possible RHA action.
Claims in other areas have yet to be lodged — including some where pay agreements have expired or are about to expire.
