The discussion on the format and location of the next combined Car and Commercial Vehicle Show is now taking place. Through your columns may I, as a large customer of the commercial vehicle manufacturers, enter a plea that never again will they combine the two shows. From the point of view of the engineers and managers in the National Freight Corporation, the purpose of the Commercial Motor Show has always been to enable comparisons and contrasts to be made, at a moment in time, between the products being offered by the various manufacturers.

This is ideally done in an unhurried way, with the salesmen, and managers of the manufacturers being able to take time to talk through their product range with the potential purchasers. At this year's Show, certainly on the day I was there, this was completely impossible because of the crowds of visitors, who were mainly attracted by the car exhibition, spilling over into the commercial vehicle and bodybuilding .halls, and making it impossible for the professional buyer -to get any perspective at all in relation to the individual exhibits.

As an opening shot in the debate, can I strongly plead that the truck manufacturers revert to their own show for 1 980. Whether this should be in London or Birmingham, I personally have no great preference.
