ELDERLY people should havl higher pensions to allow then to pay their way on publi■ transport, says the Associa tion of District Councillors.

This point of view emerge( when the ADC defended it running of concessionary fare schemes against what it des cribed as "false impressions' given by reports in the nation al press.

Individual councils must bi free to make their own deci sions on the way such scheme are run, it believes. Distric councils, said a spokesman are expected to work withii overall expenditure limits se by the Government — and thi cost still fell on the district' ratepayers in the first place.

"District councils do no receive Government mone: directly for concessionar: fares schemes. Governmen aid to local authorities is pal( as a general grant and is no directly related to their spend ing," he added.
