Its complaints sub-committee persuaded a manufacturer to pay an operator the E500 he had spent on a replacement engine for a vehicle which suffered a crankshaft failure soon after its warranty period expired.

Other cases involved excessive recovery charges, the responsibility of a tyre manufacturer, and damage caused by a recovery vehicle.

Technical committee chairman Ron Gooch said: "There can be no doubt as to the effectiveness of the RHA's representational role in defending the interests of its members.

"Many of our members are simply not geared to struggle through months of sometimes highly complex discussions or both technical and legal points and at the same time run a business.

"I hope that these recent successes will emphasise the need for all professional hauliers to unite under the banner of the RI-IA."
