AA basic source of information would be the COMMERCIAL MOTOR Tables of Operating Costs. Recently an excellent paper on the practicalities of commercial vehicle costing was given by Mr. L. A. Castleton to the TRTA Conference and summarized in our issue of October 13.
Basically there are two yardsticks for measuring the operational efficiency of one's own fleet: comparison with its previous cost and also with a professional haulier.
But because flexibility is the essence of the service provided by road transport, there are so many possible variations in conditions affecting one operator as compared with another that it is virtually impossible to generalize.
