LINK Refrigeration is considering the production of insulated and refrigerated containers, bodies and trailers in conjunction with a prominent United States manufacturer. Giving this information to a Press conference at Grimsby on Monday, Mr. G. Hallam, managing director of Humber Warehousing Group (comprising Humber Warehousing Co. Ltd., Humber Warehousing (Grimsby) Ltd., and Link Refrigeration Co. Ltd.) said there was plenty of good equipment on the market but it was too dear.
Mr. Hallam revealed that his group was seriously evaluating the use of hover-pallets for loading containers. They felt that most conventional floor designs in glass fibre or light alloy were insufficiently durable.
More frozen food production and warehousing facilities exist in Grimsby than anywhere else, said Mr. Hallam. Nearly 200 group vehicles-95 of them refrigerated or insulated—provided a nationwide delivery service. Improved roads to connect with the national road grid, and a Humber bridge were urgently necessary.
Mr. Hallam said Grimsby was to be a Freightliner terminal, but he had no intention of prejudicing his drivers' jobs by using rail services.
He had been offered a very useful rate on a five-year contract for container movement from Immingham to Liverpool. But some rates offered for container movement were absurd. He instanced a rate of £40 for the delivery and return of a 20-ton container from Grimsby to Bristol. This 330-mile trip was worth £85 on general haulage scales, claimed Mr. Hallam.
He said there was 3im sq.ft of warehousing in the area and he hoped this would double before long. But he added that he was concerned at the effect of pending legislation affecting road haulage licensing on the group's many long-term contracts.
