ABOUT 10 per cent of road ton-mileage will, in total, be likely to be diverted to rail by the effect of new Freightliner services and quantity licensing. Mr. John Morris, MoT Parliamentary Secretary, told the Commons this week.
Mr. Thomas Galbraith (Tory, Hillhead), pressed for details of how much less traffic, in tons, would be on road. This was impossible to say, said Mr. Morris; it would differ with every road but there would be a marked effect on congestion in some spots and at the southern
end of Ml, for example, would be as much as 30 per cent less.
Mr. Morris announced that construction work on the Channel tunnel is planned to begin about 1970, with completion in 1975/6.
