ADISTINCT improvement in trpfle is anticipated in the centres in which the railway workshops are situated. This will be the result of the large expenditure on construction which the companies have agreed.

Scotland.

Shipbuilding on the Clyde continues to improve, orders having been placed for four new ships. A Glasgow shipyard which has been closed for some time is to be reopened.

Scottish tweed manufacturers are receiving a fair number of orders, and the general situation shows signs of im provement. Hosiery and underwear manufacturers are busy, particularly in the fancy-goods section.

Buekhaven T.C. is to build 300 houses under a five-year scheme. Forty_ toy° houses are to be erected at Kelvindale Road, Glasgow. Airdrie T.C. is to apply for a loan for the Casten housing scheme, which is estimated to cost £98,000. Wm. Arnott, M'Leod and Co.,Ltd.,Edinburgh,is to erect 120 houses in connection with the Pottene Road scheme, and 72 in conneetcon with the Overton Road scheme for Kirkcaldy T.C.

North-east Coast.

The iron and steel industry shows it steady increase in activity, whilst ship repairing is also active. Newcastle eollieries have no lack of trade, and shipments are proceeding at a rate which absorbs the increasing output. There is a big demand for large steam coal, and Durham collieries have more work than they have had for the past year.

Northumberland C.C., is to proceed with road works estimated' to cost 1300.000.

Messrs. Bell Bros., Back Cleveland Road, Sunderland, are starting on a development scheme near the Mere Kuolls Cemetery, where 400 workingclass houses are to be built. A similar development scheme is starting on the Jesmond Towers Estate, Newcastle, by Messrs. A. and J. Potts, City Road, Newcastle. Newburn-on-'Tyne U.D.C. has accepted the tender of Messrs. R. Corse and Sons, Morpeth, for the erection of 200 houses at Throekley. Messrs. C. A. Parsons, Heaton, Newcastle. are extending their workshops, whilst It. and W. Hawthorn Leslie and Co., Hetiburn, is effecting extensive alterations to its docks and workshops. Stockton T.C. is to invite tinders for covering the Market Place, and a scheme is in preparation for new swimming baths.

Yorkshire.

In the Scunthorpe district the iron and steel industry continues to improve. another blast furnace haring been put into operation at the Frodingham Iron and Steel Works. Progress is also being made with the English Steel Corporation's scheme of extensions and reconstruction at the Sheffield works.

Business is decidedly brisker in

Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax. Dewsbury, Batley, Keighley, Leeds and Shipley, and overtime is being worked in Huddersfield and the Colne Valley in order to cope with the demand for fabrics. The spinning section also shows a decided improvement.

A satisfactory state of affairs prevails in the cutlery industry, several firms in Sheffield being unable to book any fresh business for delivery this year. Orders are numerous for better-quality cutlery and plate.

Hutton-le-Hole TJ.D.C. proposes to build 228 houses.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

Trade in general is good, although somewhat patchy. The demand for home-trade fabrics is steady.

Padiham U.D.C. is to demolish over 200 houses during a five-year shunclearance scheme. Messrs. A. Wigan and Son, Ince, Wigan, are to build 54 houses for lace U.D.C.

Midlands.

There is an improvement in the condition of the iron and steel industry in North litaffordshire—in fact, trade generally is on the upward grade in this area.

The hosiery trade in Leicester and Nottingham is good and the half-host section is picking up well. All departs ments are brisk and much overtime is being worked. The juvenile outerwear trade is also good. In the boot and shoe trade business is steady, although orders are small.

Good reports come from Birmingham, where the tube, hardware and hollowware trades are active The demand for metal pressings in steel is well maintained, mainly because of pressure for supplies from motorcar factories. Extensions to several business premises in the Birmingham and Wolverhampton district are being made. All descriptions of steel in the Birmingham district are in keen demand.

The Villiers Engineering Co., Wolverhampton, is extending its premises at an estimated cost of £10090. another industrial development in the same town is the addition of two buildings to the existing works of the Goodyear Tyro and Rubber Co.

Dudley T.C. is to erect new municipal buildings at an estimated cost of 158,557, Derby C.C. has approved a scheme for the improvement of the County Mental Hospital, MickleoVer, at an estimated cost of £26,567. Stourbridge T.C. has approved a scheme for the extension of the gasworks at an estimated cost of 148,000. Lindsey C.C. has adapted a 10-year plan of road and bridge improvement, costing £21)4,450..

Wales.

Reports from Cardiff show that there is more activity in the Welsh steam-coat shipments than for ninny months, and, in Swansea, it has been impossible to get coal away fast enough during the past few weeks. The tin-plate industry is most active.

A building syndicate at Port Talbot proposes to erect 300 houses if a site can be acquired on Penycae Road.

London and Home Counties.

Uxbridge U.D.C. is to erect 150 houses on the Avenue housing estate. Hillingdon. The city engineer, Oxford, is to prepare plans for the construction of about 150 houses on the Rose FEU Estate. There is also a scheme afoot for the rehousing of persons from clearance areas.

Islington B.C. is to erect a block of 109 tenements in Sebbon Street. The L.C.C. is to spend 1180,000 on housing in the Kennington district, and £10.365 for property at Old Ford Road, Poplar.

Messrs. Bendel, Palmer and Tritton have been recommended as engineers for the reconstruction and widening of Chelsea Bridge at an estimated cost of £480,000. Plans have been prepared by Messrs. Adams, Pearson and Holden for removing Westminster Hospital from Broad Sanctuary to Horseferry Road, at an estimated cost of £600,000 Portsmouth T.C. is considering a scheme to develop the Lumps Fort site as a winter garden and recreation ground, the estimated cost being. 1200,000. A six-storey bloek of 28.1 fiats, estimated to cost £250,000, is to be built at Richmond-on-Thames for D. Ainslie and Co., Ltd., Penton Street. London, W. Messrs. Gordon and Jeeves. Hanover Square, London, W., are architects for a block of 360 fiats and 30 shops to be built adjoining the King's Theatre, Hammersmith.
