• A new deal between the EC and Switzerland should make border crossings easier for hauliers from July 1991.
The two sides have agreed that inspections should be limited to random checks, and that inspections should take place "with the minimum delay necessary and as far as possible in one place". Express lanes wil be created at some border crossings for goods in transit. There is also a commitment to keep frontier posts open 24 hours a day for the benefit of transit operations and to ensure that offices are open for at least six hours a day from Monday to Friday for other formalities. Out-of-hours inspections will be offered, at a price. The agreement also calls for arrangements "to take account of the requirements of commercial operators" when siting Customs offices.
