Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Remoulded tyres have been withdrawn from sale at all Halfords vehicle parts and accessory outlets following tests that concluded they were potentially dangerous.

Halfords commissioned the Millbrook Proving Ground to undertake the tests on its sole range of remould tyres, made by Monarch. "The research showed that on a wet surface certain remould tyres lose their adhesion more quickly, and have a wet grip inferior to that of a new 'original issue' tyre," says Alan Rennie, Halfords product group controller. "Thus braking in rainy conditions with a remould tyre cannot be considered as safe."

Graham Newland, director of the Retread Manufacturers Association, which represents most British remoulders, is furious with Halfords for making these allegations without warning anyone in the industry, and without discussing how the tests were carried out. "How can they denigrate a whole industry based on the testing of one type of remould tyre?" he asks. "It is deplorable. We don't know the conditions under which the tests were carried out, and therefore if they are valid.

Newland says remould tyres hold 41% of the commercial vehicle market, and users should rest assured they are a safe, reliable and economical alternative to new tyres.
