Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Following Commercial Motor's roadtest of the Seddon Atkinson Strato (CM 29 March-4 April) Cummins is working on a series of engine modifications.

Our roadtesters criticised the Strato's Cummins E365 14litre engine for its high fuel consumption and poor driveability. Cummins agrees there is a problem — but expects to have a solution within two weeks.

The problem seems to have arisen when the well-proven E350 engine was modified to boost power without losing any torque. Changes included deeper valve pockets, revised piston and head design, higher compression ratio (from 14 to 15:1) and high-pressure injector nozzles.

Cummins stresses that not every E365 engine is affected, but it is particularly keen to cure the problem quickly as the revisions introduced for the E365 are shared by its top-ofthe-range, the Super E465.
