• International courier giant DHL could be on the brink of strengthening its hand by clinching a joint-venture deal with two leading airlines.
DHL is believed to be in talks with a consortium formed by the West German airline Lufthansa, Japan Air Lines and Japanese trading house Nissho Iwai.
Such a link would certainly help DHL expand its share of the international light parcels market, currently dominated by Federal Express, United Parcel Services and TNT, and would give DHL a foothold in Japan in time for the planned deregulation of the Japanese parcels sector.
DHL will only say that it is always talking to air carriers; but Lufthansa has told CM that it is holding talks with DHL about buying a share of the company. The consortium is also believed to be after a share in DHL's North American subsidiary, DHL Corporation.
