• Bedwas unveiled its new Challenger 14 prison vans and a modular concept Service Unit (PSU) van at the National Police Vehicle Fleet managers conference last week.

It is designed to carry up to 14 prisoners sat in individual aluminium panelled cells with driver and one escort.

Interlocking cell doors have shatterproof glass. Emergency escape hatches are installed in the roof along with ventilation units.

The first six Challengers for Home Office use are mounted on 4.4m Roadrunner 08.13 chassis 7.5 tonne GVW. Fully fuelled the vehicles weigh 5.120kg for working at 7.5 tonnes GVW.

Other models in the prison van range include the Iveco Zeta and Renault S56 (12 seater) Renault Master and LDaf 400 (six seater) versions.
