Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

:astrol has launched two oils which could cut the transport industry's £2.7 n fuel bill by around 3% at the same time

erving oil reserves by 35 1%.

strol Dynan-tax is suitable :.rvice fill of all foure petrol and diesel enused in public transport, haulage and off-highway

is a partial synthetic grade ined with a high quality oil having the viscosity classification of SAE 10W/30 but with a claimed performance equivalent to the more familiar SAE 15W/40 format.

Relatively cheap fuel supplies have rendered the internal combustion engine surprisingly inefficent over its 100 years of production. For a diesel engine working under part load 20% of energy is attributed to friction losses, half to exhaust and coolant and about a third is useful.

The bulk of energy lost to internal engine friction is in overcoming shearing forces as between piston ring and cylinder wall and more is lost through pumping and churning the oil.

While Castrol recognises that reduction of viscosity can by itself lead to energy saving its effect is limited due to the aggravation of lubrication problems.

For gearboxes and drive axles, Castrol has produced Dynadrive a mineral based gear oil of SAE 80W/90 viscosity which shows particular benefit at low operating temperatures as at start up and during stop start operation. For best results the use of both products is recommended.

• Gulf Oil has also had the haulage industry's interests at heart in producing a new generation of engine and gear train lubricants, that have been proven in trials in America and Europe.

Powertech AEI' (Advanced Engine Protection) 100W/30 engine oil showed a long term viscosity stability during tests up to 60,000km (37,500 miles) that would permit the safe extension of drain intervals.

As well as having a high resistance to bore polishing, the oil's high temperature performance and oxidisation resistance promises complete protection even in extreme working conditions.

Gulfs Transtech gear oil is lighter and thinner than traditional gear oils but has a low viscosity and increased lubricity that lowers operating temperatures as well as reducing power and friction losses.

Transtech also allows extended drain intervals.

Customer trials with Imperial Foods Transport Services using Volvo E6 articulated vehicles running at 15 tonnes on trunking routes, for Golden Wonder and Mercedes-Benz 6081) van sales vehicles identified savings in both fuel and oil use.
