Next Tuesday, May 21, will see the opening in Recklinghausen, in the heart of the Ruhr, of the first European exhibition and conference devoted exclusively to vehicles and lifting gear used in the movement and erection of heavy and indivisible loads.

A separate section has been allocated to recovery vehicles and ancillary equipment suitable for maximum weight road vehicles, and a conference session of particular interest to heavy haulage operators takes place on May 22. The wide divergence of construction and use regulations in European countries will be examined in the context of planning international journeys for special-purpose vehicles.

On Thursday the morning session will discuss engineering progress in leavy load carrier design with )articular reference to power units ind hydrostatic transmissions. After noon demonstrations include novel techniques applied in the recovery of an overturned articulated road tanker, and the co-ordination of a vehicle fleet in the delivery and offloading sequences of prefabricated building components.

Exhibits include lorry-mounted cranes, special mobile cranes, lowloaders, over-size trailers, heavy-duty fork-lift trucks, prime movers as well as self-propelled heavy load carriers. The last named section will include an interesting example of the equipment built by Scheuerle. The Scheuerle system of combining the "traction head" with the loadcarrying section reduces space requirements, improves manoeuvrability and allows the platform size and capacity to be matched more closely to the payload. Hydrostatic drive is a feature of the Scheuerle "self-drive" heavy load platforms and the modular system
