A LONDON MEAT haulage firm had the licence of its affiliate company in Luton curtailed on Friday by the removal of a fivevehicle margin, leaving it a seven-vehicle fleet. The curtailment was for two months.
The deputy Metropolitan LA, Mr J. L. M. Bowyer, heard that Challis Transport of Luton, incorporated with Barkers Transport of Barking, was issued with one immediate and two delayed GV9s after a vehicle examiner had visited its premises.
The examiner, Mr J. Atkinson, said that there was no system of regular preventive maintenance, no recent records that the vehicles had not been regularly inspected or maintained.
In his defence Mr George Barker of Barker Transport said that there was an acute shortage of skilled labour in the Luton area and this was responsible for the poor maintenance record at Challis Transport.
