MERCEDES-BENZ this week announced a new range of long and mediumdistance trucks for gross weights between 16.2 tonnes (16 tons) and 26.4 tonnes (26 tons). Models will be on show at Earls Court in September and will be launched on the UK. market early next year. It is understood that two and threeaxle tractive units, and rigids offering a variety of driveaxle configurations, will be available.

The introduction of these vehicles marks the second stage of M-B's rationalized truck programme which began in 1973 with a four and six-wheel tipper range featuring 400-series engines, hub-reduction axles and a new all-steel cab (CM August 10 1973).

In extending the pro gramme to include haulage vehicles, M-B has produced a sleeper version of the allsteel cab for long-distance models. It is 60cm (21 in) longer than the short model and is fitted with two bunks. Head clearance in the cab has been increased by 8cm (3 in) compared to the original model.

Daily checks Daily checks can be completed through flaps in the bodywork, and the cab tilts to 70° for engine servicing and maintenance.

Two-axle tractive units have a double frame to reduce vibration.

The dual-circuit pneumatic braking system complies with EEC Regulations. Standard 41cm (16.1 in) diameter drums are fitted throughout the range, as is an improved loaddependent brake-pressure regulator which operates on all axles. The 400 series range comprises V10, V8, and V6 diesel engines producing 235kW (320 bhp), DIN, 188 kW (256bh] DIN, and 141 kW (192 bill DIN. According to engin ZF 6-80, S6-90 and S-100G gearboxes are fitted. Al wheel-drive versions ha) the S-110GPA gearbox.
