nPERATORS of 30 tankers, J. M.

Horrocks and Sons, Ltd., Miles Platting, who ha,ve specialized in tar and tar products work since 1897, were granted two additional 3,400-gallon tankers on B licence by the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. J. R. Lindsay, at Manchester last week. British Railways objected.

Mr. J. A. Dunkerley, for the applicants, said their whole fleet was working to capacity. Their transport difficulties were because of increased business, and the figures for the whole fleet showed that in between the years 1955 and 1956 the tonnage carried had increased from 166,000 to 193,000; mileage run from 639,000 to 729,000; and receipts from nearly £80,000 to over £93,000. Hiring during the same period had increased from £2,500to £5,000.

Tar products work required specially designed tankers and it was exceedingly difficult to hire suitable vehicles. As a consequence the fleet was stretched to the limit. Tankers had to be loaded at the refinery on Sundays, involving overtime, and maintenance had to be done throughout the night.

Questioned by Mr. A. W. Balne, for British Railways, Mr. R. P. Fothergill, secretary of Lancashire Tar Distillers, said the railways were vital to the company, who owned 140 rail tank trucks and used them to full capacity. This work would be in no way affected by the present application which was entirely for new work.

Mr. Balne submitted that in view of this assurance the railway objection would be withdrawn.

Al STILL " DEADLY "

This is stated in a leaflet which the British Road Federation are issuing to interested parties to stir up "a band of critical opinion" about the condition of the Great North Road from London to Newcastle upon Tyne.
