BRISTOL-BASED haulier Massey Wilcox Transport has switched to a Michelin tyre contract across its 170-strong fleet, ending a 12-year relationship with previous supplier Commercial Contract Tyres.
Massey Wilcox managing director Robert Wilcox says: “Michelin tried many times to get our business, and have now proved to be more competitive than our previous supplier. Every two years we look at what is going on in the marketplace and look to save where we can. The quality of Michelin’s tyres will improve fleet performance and give us cost savings on fuel and tyres.” The predominantly Mercedes-Benz fleet will now run a mix of Michelin E-segment tyres with XZE 2+ steer-axle tyres, XDE 2+ drive tyres and XTE 3 trailer tyres on its general haulage operations. Michelin will also supply Massey Wilcox with a regrooving and remixing service to give new casings a four-use lifespan. Roadside repair will be provided by ATS Euromaster.
Wilcox adds: “The Toyo tyres we used to run had a very hard rubber compound, and our drivers found that when they were running light or empty they were losing grip. Michelin are the best tyres on the market, and they also claim an improvement in fuel consumption. It’s obviously hard to quantify that, but if there’s an added benefit [to running the tyres] then that’s good for our operation.”
