UNITE IS WRITING up a list of proposals for fuel distributors to consider ahead of April negotiations. Last week the trade union successfully met BP, DHL, Hoyer, Suckling Transport, Turners (Soham) and Wincanton to discuss challenges facing the fuel distribution sector (CM 10 March).
A Unite spokesman says: “The meeting discussed a range of issues of mutual concern in a positive atmosphere. The parties agreed to exchange views on specific proposals to be tabled by Unite in a second meeting to be scheduled for early April.” The proposals are expected to cover driver wages, pensions and safety standards, with the intention of striking a deal to avoid industrial action by some 3,000 tanker drivers. Allan Davison, divisional director at Hoyer, says: “The meeting was a welcome one where we had a general discussion about the current state of the industry. We expect Unite’s proposals shortly so we can look into them ahead of the next meeting.”
