Derek Linch Haulage blames the rising cost of fuel and a major contract loss for its collapse into administration, writes Roger Brown. Director Derek Linch says the family-owned haulier, based in Romney Marsh, Kent, ceased trading on 14 March after 34 years.
He says the decision in September 2009 by soft drinks manufacturer Silver Spring to switch its transport operation to Jigsaw, combined with the rising price of fuel, was a key factor. “After the loss of that contract, we kept going, but with fuel prices rising it was too much. We are now closing our doors. This is a sad day.” Linch estimates that his firm lost about £180,000-worth of business when Silver Spring took its business elsewhere. He says Derek Linch Haulage, which ran 20 trucks, has been put into administration, and 31 people including drivers, workshop and admin staff, have lost their jobs.
