Tyres are subject to many regulations, with each one also possessing an ‘E’ mark denoting that it is type approved.
Yet Wells says MWS sees examples of damaged wheels all the time; ones that are cracked, or have failed, have been over tightened or are just not up to scratch, but they have still been sold on and used on HGVs.
“The wheel itself is actually quite a robust element of the vehicle,” he says. “It can potentially go through its life with a crack and yet there could be no problem at all. However, the day that you slam on the brakes or swerve and put undue strain on this part of the vehicle is the day it could collapse.”
