to write after reading Gary Fox's letter (CM 25 Feb-2 March) about the abundance of drivers straight from driving school.
[passed my HGV Class 1 in June 1986 while living in Swansea. [spent three months after that writing to nearly 300 firms in the South Wales area for employment, but it appeared I had no experience and would never be considered for an HGV vacancy. In September 1986, however I joined the Territorial Army (Royal Engineers) and gained a lot of experience driving HGVs.
It wasn't until December 1987, however, that I actually had an offer of employment, from Hall Aggregates in Redhill. I have now been working there for three months.
The point I wish to make is that the only way I "learnt" how to drive an HGVs was not at a training school but to actually get in an HGV and drive it!
