• Leigh Interests, the Walsall-based waste disposal contractor, is raising almost 210 million from its shareholders as part of an expansion plan. The company, which runs 400 road tankers, skip carriers and rear-load trucks, plans to build depots in the south, to extend its fleet and possibly make acquisitions.
Leigh, which went public in 1966, is the second largest waste disposal firm in the UK with about 25 depots. Shareholders will be offered four shares for each of their own. The company forecasts pre-tax profits of 2,4 million to 31 March 1988 — 62% more than last year, when it spent 25.71 million.
Group services director Edward Wilkinson says the extra cash is needed for expansion and modernisation of depots and vehicles. One of its specially-equipped vacuum tankers costs up to 2100,000.
