• This Carmichael lightweight bulk Superloader tank semitrailer gives a payload of 26.2 tonnes when coupled to an ERF EIO 4x2 tractive unit, says the company.
Its 28.3m3 aluminium tank is mounted on a speciallydesigned steel chassis with a rear steered axle, carbon fibre springs, alloy rims and an Edbro DS 18 tipping ram, to give a trailer tare weight of 5.54 tonnes.
A Holmes 220 compressor driven by Volvo hydraulics allows discharge rates of up to 1.18 tonnes a minute with cement, while it takes about 40 minutes to blow 26 tonnes of sand to a height of 18.3m. • Winc.anton Distribution has specified Drum Engineering hydraulic compressor/exhausters on 25 new vehicles.
The Jupiter 75 compressor/exhauster's variable displacement pump is claimed to ensure consistant hydraulic drive independent of engine speed variations, giving a vacuum of about 0.4bar at all times.
Drum Engineering's hydraulic system is lighter than the original electric system, which incorporates a bank of auxiliary batteries. The vehicle's electrics, independent of the new system, no longer runs the risk of starting problems due to battery drain.
When pressure discharge is needed for off-loading to a drawbar tank trailer or static bulk tank, the system's reverse flow valve can be used to allow normal compressor operation, controlled from the cab.
• Pirelli of Italy has revived its attempt to create the world's third-biggest tyre company, by bidding for Firestone Tyre and Rubber of America.
The £1,007 million offer faces competition from Bridgestone of Japan, which has bid for 75% of Firestone's shares. Firestone will not comment on the counter bid until the board has reviewed the Italian offer. Firestone would be a major prize for either Pirelli or Bridgestone, as both companies want to expand into North America.
