A refuse compactor, known as the P30, has been developed by Anchorpac which has a rated capacity of 3.48 cu yd and can compact a load to a density of 500/800 lb /cu yd, dependent on the nature of the material. A single hydraulic cylinder applies a thrust of 22.72 tons which enables it to crush bulky objects such as timber pallets, baled cardboard and oil drums, the cycle time being 37sec. And it is designed to handle semiabrasive materials such as glass, steel turnings and so on.
The loading aperture is 42in. x 60in. and the machine can be fitted with bulk hoppers for use with mechanized loading attachments at the side or rear. While it is applicable to multi-bucket containers of 14/25 Cu yd capacity, it is particularly suitable for applications to 20/40 cu yd roll-on containers. Reinforcing bars are fitted to both sides of the machine and to the main header bar to protect the machine from damage should bulky materials become diagonally wedged. The machine is constructed from rolled-steel sections and high-tensile plate to provide rigidity and resistance to abrasion.
The compacting ram is 60in. wide and 30in. deep and slides in close contact with a floor plate designed to be easily replaceable when worn. Other moving surfaces embody special anti-friction pads of polymer nyltron which require no lubrication and have a selfwiping action.
The hydraulic power unit comprises a 10 hp totally enclosed fan-cooled motor which drives the tandem van-type pump via a flexible coupling and is mounted on a large-capacity oil reservoir. When the container is approaching full load, one pump is automatically unloaded at half maximum pressure to give double the thrust at half speed.
Having an overall length and width of 142.5in. and 81in respectively, the machine weighs 4.5 tons. The compactor was designed with the mediumsized industrial user in mind who has to cope with a high volume of unsegregated or bulky refuse with minimum pollution.
