• A new electric battery-powered street cleansing and refuse collection vehicle, based on the award-winning design of the Cabac dairy van, is now being ordered in considerable numbers by local authorities throughout the country.

Manufactured by Smith's Electric Vehicles Ltd, of Gateshead, this vehicle can accommodate a crew of four or five without need for the construction of special carrying cabs. The Cabac eliminates the nuisance of cab doors yet affords complete weather protection and provides a greater degree of safety on multi-stop-start application.

The provision of a clothes locker fitted on the offside of the walkway makes it impossible to step into the road and the space it affords, together with another locker fitted above the passenger seats, gives an amount of storage area not normally available on traditional type vehicles.

The vehicle shown in the accompanying picture has a gross weight of 65cwt but can be uprated to 75cwt by changing wheels and tyres. The main charger and isolatir switch are fitted conveniently adjacent 1 the driver's seat so that in case emergency isolation is immediate ar complete and the vehicle cannot be drivt until the charger plug is withdrawn.

The body is constructed in heavy-dui commercial quality hard alloy, combinir strength with lightness. It is mounted on steel sub-frame to which are fitted the twi hydraulic jacks.
