• Although the TGWU will continue its opposition to the Common Market, it has asked its regional committees to discuss the implications of Common Market transport legislation in its bearing on TGWU policies.
Among matters to be discussed, the 8hour driving day, which could be applicable in 1976, is high on the agenda. Tachographs, due to be fitted to all new vehicles from 1976 and to all vehicles by 1978 will be re-examined. "If and when they are introduced by law in this country we shall be looking for something really tangible, some pretty substantial payments for having these things", says Ken Jackson, the TGWU national secretary for road transport.
The union chief says the 8-hour day would wreck the many productivity deals in the oil trade and in general haulage which have been based on a 40-hour week.
