Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Food Manufacturers Federation's pallet collection scheme has cut the losses of four manufacturers from 30 to 15 per cent in its first year. The companies, General Foods, Heinz, Nestle and SPD (Unilever), who own about 800,000 pallets, were losing 240,000 a year. The monetary saving amounts to about ,E180,000 a year.

The co-operation of road hauliers has contributed to the success of the scheme and an incentive bonus for pallet collection paid through hauliers to drivers is said to have worked well, without. prejudicing delivery schedules. Pallets are delivered to the depot of any participating company.

Spillers and Associated Biscuits have now joined the scheme and a million pallets are involved. It is possible that glass manufacturers will also participate.
