S. A. Finals, managing director, British Transport Docks Board, has been elected next president of the Institute of Transport. He takes office on October 1 and delivers his presidential address on October 9.
Mr. Ennis is a member of the executive committees of the National Association of Port Employers and of the Dock and Harbour Authorities' Association and a member of the council of the Confederation of British Industry. He joined the Institute in 1930.
New chairman of the TRTA Potteries area is A. E. Booth, with D. Boston deputy-chairman and K. Beardmore and J. Hood vice-chairman. Edinburgh Fife and Border areas chairman is A. G. Hunter and vice-chairman J. W. R. White. Glasgow and West al Scotland area chairman is J. P. Grierson and vice-chairman J. C. Guthrie.
George Sparshatt, managing director of George Sparshatt (Southampton) Ltd., has been appointed to the management board of Steels Garages Ltd.
E. H. Leicester is to be London Transport fares and charges officer in succession to H. W. Brooksbank, who is retiring this month; and A. A. S. Symonds has been appointed principal executive assistant (operating), reporting to the Central Buses traffic officer. K. Surphlis has been elected chairman of the RHA Barrow-in-Furness sub-area and R. Vickers vice-chairman.
T. J. E. Price has been elected chairman of the RHA long-distance group. Vice-chairmen are R. W. Tree, J. Castle and L. G. Valiance.
J. K. Isaac, deputy traffic manager of Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd., has been appointed traffic manager of the North Western Road Car Co. Ltd., in succession to P. Scully, who has been appointed general manager of the Aldershot and District Traction Co. Ltd.
J. W. Tweedie has been appointed commercial manager of the Scottish Bus Group. During his 40 years' service in the transport industry he has held positions in Oban, Buckie, Aberdeen, Falkirk and Edinburgh.
Wolverhampton Transport's chief inspector, Joseph Eyett. has retired. He joined the Birmingham and Midland Tramway Co. (Wolverhampton district) as a conductor in 1924, four years before that company was taken over by Wolverham pton Corporation.
Den Caney, proprietor of Harborne Motor Services and the Universal Travel Agency in Birmingham, has been chosen by Ladywood Liberals as prospective Liberal candidate for the Birmingham City Council elections on May 11. Mr. Caney, 42, has fought the past four municipal elections in Northfield.
OBITUARY
We regret to record the deaths of Mr. P. G. Gibbins, Mr. William Taylor and Mr. William Edward Jackson.
Mr. Gibbins was London Transport's Chief Superintendent, Central Road Services, from 1950 until he retired in 1959. He joined Walthamstow Corporation Tramways in 1910 and in 1926 became chief assistant to the general manager, tramways. Four years later he became operating assistant and in 1933 district superintendent, London Passenger Transport Board. In 1935 he was made assistant divisional superintendent, and in 1941, divisional superintendent, trams and trolleybuses, Southern division. In 1948 he was made chief superintendent, trams and trolley buses. His son Eric is editor of Commercial Vehicles.
Provost of Findochty for the past three years, Mr. Taylor, 72, was head of Taylor's Transport Ltd., Buckie.
Mr. Jackson was a haulage contractor and coach proprietor of The Haven, Milverton Drive, Wigston Fields, Leicester.
