T ATEST link in the national Freightliner network—the Stratford container terminal—is -1-1 now being built. Its first services will be introduced in mid-summer and by 1969 it is anticipated that it will be dealing with 25 services a day.
Covering 31 acres, this new terminal will be used for the transfer of both inland and import/ export containers from road to rail and vice versa within the Freightliner network.
Adjoining the main line between London and East Anglia, the terminal has ready access to the principal rail routes to and from all parts of the country and the Continent via the port of Harwich. Existing lines are directly connected with the PLA docks.
Road entrance to the terminal is in Temple Mills Lane, Stratford.
Work has already started on the cranage site for the inland Freightliner services. This will incorporate two electrically driven Goliath cranes which will span three rail tracks and one loading motor road.
Two larger electric Goliath cranes, designed for six tracks or roads between the crane legs and two additional tracks or roads on either side under the crane cantilevers, will then be installed in parallel.
These cranes will be used for both inland and Continental services and will have storage space under them for Continental containers awaiting Customs clearance.
In addition to the cranage areas there will be a depot control office and amenity building with locker and messing facilities for the staff near the north-east road entrance to the terminal.
Maintenance facilities for the chief mechanical and electrical engineer's department will also be provided together with an electricity substation to supply current for the cranes.
Allowance has been made in the layout for eventual expansion after 1969 as the traffic demands.
Container terminal manager will be 40-year-old Mr. Leslie B. Sidey.
WEST LOTHIAN DEPOT
A 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse and transport depot is to be opened at Whitehill industrial estate, Blackburn, West Lothian, by _T. A. C. Bain Garages Ltd., of Luton and Leighton Buzzard, a wholly owned subsidiary of the road haulage public company, Burnholme and Forder Ltd.
