On Wednesday the Ministry of Transport and the British Railways Board jointly published maps showing the basic railway network which is to be retained and developed "to meet social as well as economic and commercial needs". This 11,000-mile network is shown in general lines here, although the scale does not permit showing of some of the smaller lines to be retained. Thick black lines show routes for both passenger and freight services, thin black lines the freight-only routes, while the grey lines show routes not intended for inclusion in the basic network. They are not necessarily scheduled for closure: the usual procedure of TUCCs and Ministerial examination will be followed.
