Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

QREAT expense is incurred annually VI-by authorities operating fire pumps, ambulances, etc., in keeping petrol engines warmed up. This is, of course, dou0,to ensure rapid starting when an emergency arises, also to prevent damage to power units that would be occasioned by a rapid getaway with cold oil which would not flow freely. To minimize the need for such warming-up runs, also to perform other useful duties, Mr. P. G. Caldwell, A.I.Min.E., 1, West Hill Avenue, Mansfield, has introduced the Caldwell thermo-electric engine beater • and battery charger.

The cylindrical body of the device comprises a water jacket, containing

electric heating elements. The water inlet of the device is connected to the base of the radiator or its piping, whilst the outlets for heated water are coupled to the water jackets of the engine. Hot water from the device circulates through the cylinder block by means of thermosiplionic action.

Perfect safety is ensured, as there is no naked flame, and overheating cannot occur ; no attention is needed.

1 amp., 2 amps. or 4 amps. respectively.

For alternating current the 6-volt types cost £11 us. (250 watts, 1 amp. charge), f12 12s. (500 watts, 2 amps. charge), £13 13s. (1,000 watts, 4 amps.

charge). For 12-volt sets the corresponding prices are £12 12s., £15 15s. and 117 17s. If only the heater and fittings be desired—that is, with no charger, the cost for any current-consumption rate up to 1,000 watts is £7 7s.

In addition to the aforementioned

advantages the battery is charged slowly, water-freezing cannot occur, the life of the battery is prolonged, the coat is about Sd. per night and condensation in the ignition apparatus is avoided.

Amongst other users Caldwell devices are employed by undertakings at Leicester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Dundee, Grantham, Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse, Carlton, St. Helens and by the North Midlands Coalowners' Rescue Stations Co., Ltd.
