III Pressure group Transport 2000 is planning a meeting for the autumn at which it will formulate green codes of practice for hauliers and freight users (CM1117 Feb).
Director Stephen Joseph says the self-regulation that these codes of practice would impose would help to improve the way industry treats hauliers and "bring the argument out into the open".
He adds: You must pay for quality in the road haulage industry...and the users of freight are the customers of the industry Firms are claiming to be green but we have got to make them face the fact that this includes freight operations."
Hauliers and freight users would have to pay to belong to the schemes, but Joseph wants to see some Government funding because the codes of practice are needed "in the absence of Government regulation".
