I read with interest your News Extra (May 20) about the Commons Select Committee, considering high taxes on commercial vehicles, and also thinking of the railways as a social service. In the present economic situation nothing, especially the railways, can be termed a social service, regardless of cost.

We taxpayers pay for all the social services, no matter how good or bad the service. The railways, with all their technical knowhow, cannot ruh their business at a profit, yet some members of the Select Committee are considering letting them run buses as well, though just an experiment, to cost out the project.

Why waste more money, when cash for some things is not available?

Any increase in vehicle tax, as suggested by the Select Committee, only adds to the cost of living, as most of the increases are passed to hauliers' customers, who in turn increase the price of their goods.

Economic suicide

Some members of the Select Committee, also consider it a good thing that the 280-mile (450km) limit be introduced as soon as possible.

'A sure way to economic suicide.

It amazes me that people who have been voted into office, to serve the country to the best of their ability, can quite willingly do such damage to this country by even thinking this way.

I am sure the French (who always dig their heels in) would not be keen on this legislation, if we the British were suggesting that they accept it.

This Commons Committee appear to be considering how to waste money, and there is enough of that done already, by the Government. GORDON THOMSON, Glasgow.
