"But on the asset side", he added, "there is no doubt that in this country we have the skilled manpower, management and technical expertise as good as anywhere in the world—given the right climate to operate in."
Sir Donald was presenting his Lord Wakefield Gold Medal Paper entitled, "The role of the British Motor Industry in International Trading", to a meeting of the Institute of the Motor Industry in London. He dealt comprehensively with factors which affected the exports of commercial vehicles.
Sir Donald said that exporters needed more positive encouragement by government, preferably on the lines of the very helpful export rebate, and suggested that there should be a massive switch from direct towards indirect taxation.
