CONCERN over the delay in obtaining delivery of new vehicles was expressed by Mr. J. W. Womar, chairman of the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., at the company's annual meeting on Wednesday. To safeguard the position for next year, orders had, he said, been placed for 30 single-deck buses, 10 low-bridge double-deckers and five luxury coaches, estimated to cost some £190,000.
The new single-deckers would be 44-seaters and replace the older 31seaters. New double-deckers would not carry so many more passengers because of restrictive regulations which stipulated that double-deckers 30 ft. long must have three axles.
"While we are pleased to know that there is some road programme, inadequate though it is, we shall be a great deal happier when we see some positive signs that this vital problem is really being tackled," stated Mr. Womar.
Last year's bad weather reduced " chance " and pleasure traffic. The average fare paid per passenger was lower than in the previous 12 months, although the number of passengers carried showed a slight increase. The poor weather might have brought more short-distance passengers, but it kept away passengers who would normally have travelled longer distances for pleasure or other reasons.
