YOUR ARTICLE about restored Ford Transcontinentals led to a sharp exhalation of breath from this correspondent (CM, 22 May).
When we started in "proper haulage" in 1981 (we came from a removals background), we bought two second-hand P-reg Transcons.
We were hauling trailers for B+1 Line out of Fleetwood.
Those trucks certainly gave us an unparalleled insight into used vehicles. Fuel consumption was abysmal, the cabs were total rustbuckets, the electrics never survived a journey without creating a problem (I can't remember a truck being fully lit at any one time), and, worst of all, the brakes were almost non-existent!
11 we ever needed to use a temporary driver, they came back with a litany of problems.
As we grew we were able to replace them with Scanias... and what a difference they have made.
We look at the past with rosetinted specs, but nothing makes me nostalgic for the Transconti! Des Ponsonby
