THE EXPANSION of combined transport in' West Germany, which is backed by a powerful Government drive, continued last year when a record 336,400 lorry-loads were carried. This is an increase of 15 per cent compared with 1980.

German railways are now using 1,400 goods wagons per day to carry lorries, trailers and containers.

A report on last year's operations by the German Society for Combined Transport says foreign transport firms are now making increased use of the facilities.

Among the foreign users of the system which permits complete lorries to be carried were 126 British firms.

Altogether 5.5m tonnes of goods were carried last year in combined transport. Turnover was nearly £40m.
